SUBJECT: Authorization to Hire Police Receptionist (E)
Action Sought
The Council is asked to authorize the hiring of Cristie Lesko for the position of Receptionist with the Police
Department.
Background
For many years the front desk at the Police Station has been staffed by Community Service Officers. However, the
high rate of turn over in the CSO position has made keeping the front desk staffed a challenge. Therefore, last fall,
the Council approved a recommendation from Chief Tate to convert a vacant CSO position to a Receptionist
position, in an effort to provide greater stability and continuity.
The Civil Service Commission completed the testing process to establish an initial eligible register for the position
and a recommendation for hire was brought forward in January of this year. However, that individual changed her
mind at the last minute and never started in the position. Staff and the Commission then went back to the original
applicant pool, interviewed additional candidates and established an updated register for the position. The top
three individuals on the eligible register at this time, listed in alphabetical order, are:

Chantel Nelson
Khoua Tran
Recommendation
Chief Tate recommends hiring Cristie Lesko for the position of Police Receptionist, at Step D of Grade 1 of the
2013 Non -Union Pay Plan ($16.22 per hour), subject to successful completion of the required pre - employment
physical / drug test and psychological evaluation.
Budget Impact
Funding for this position is available in the adopted 2013 operating budget for the Police Department. While this is
a new position for the Police Department, a vacant full -time CSO position was eliminated, so there is no net gain in
staffing numbers.

This items relates to Goal E: Deliver effective and efficient public services with a staff of well- trained, caring and
professional employees.
Requested Action
The Council is asked to authorize the hiring of Cristie Lesko for the position of Police Receptionist at Step D of
Grade 1 of the 2013 Non -Union Pay Plan, subject to successful completion of the required pre - employment
screenings.
