Action Sought
The City Council is asked to authorize the hirmg of Kay Tran for the position of Receptionist with the Police
Department.
Background �
Several months ago, one of the Police Departinent's two Community Service Officers was proinoted to the
position of Police Ogicer. Rather than filling tl�at CSO position directly, staffsought Council approve to
convert the position to a Receptionist. Currently the Department's CSOs sta�the front desk at the Police
Station, but the rate of turnover among CSOs was making that dif�icult.
Council approved a job description for the Police Receptionist position in early October and the Civil Service
Convnission conducted the necessary recruitrnent and testmg process to establish an eligible register.
Traditionally the names of the top tl�ree candidates on the eliglble register are brought forward to the City
Council along with the Chiefs recommendation to hire one individuaL However, m this case, only two
candidates tested well enough to be placed on the eligible register, so there are only two names to bring
forward. Listed 'm alphabetical order, those are:

Recommendation
Chief Tate recomrriends the hiring of Kay Tran for the position of Receptionist with the Police Department at
Step C of Grade 1 of the 2013 Non-Union Pay Plan($17.18 per how-), contingent upon successful
completion of the required pre-employment medical e�m/drug test and psychological screening. (A
comprehensive background check has already been successfully completed.)
Budget Impact
Fund'mg for this position is included in the adopted 2013 operating budget.

Requested Action
Ifthe Council concurs, it is asked to offer a motion to authorize the hiring ofKay Tran for the position of
Receptionist with the Police Department at Step C of Grade 1 of the 2013 Non-Union Pay Plan($17.18 per
hour), contingent upon successful coinpletion of the required pre-employment medical exam/drug test and
psychological screening.
