I, CITY OF SHAKOPEE CONSENT Police Department Memorandum TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council Mark McNeill, City Administrator FROM: Bob Forberg, Sergeant 6r SUBJECT: Authorization to Hire One Police Officer - Christopher Christy DATE: April 14, 2004 INTRODUCTION: The Police Department is requesting Council approval to fill a vacant police officer position. BACKGROUND: The Shakopee Police Department currently has six vacant police officers positions. The Police Civil Service Commission conducted the necessary testing that created the Police Officer eligible register. The following names are the top three candidates listed, in alphabetical order, on the eligible register established by the Police Civil Service Commission. . Carl Bock . Christopher Christy . PaulO 'Hanlon Minnesota State Statute Chapter 419 requires the Police Civil Service Commission to submit the top three names listed on the eligible register to the Appointing Authority (City Council), to fill any vacancy. BUDGET IMPACT: Funds exist in the police department's budget and there is a need to fill the vacant police officer position. The position will be compensated at an entry-level rate. Th~ current labor agreement establishes $3,358.58 per month as Step 1 wage for a probationary police officer. A portion of his wage will be paid from a Universal Hiring Grant approved by City Council in 2003. ALTERNATIVES: 1. Do not authorize the hire. 2. Authorize hire. 3. Table and provide staff with additional direction. RECOMMENDATION: Alternative #2. Staff recommends Council authorize the hiring Christopher Christy as a probationary police officer. ACTION REQUESTED: If the Council concurs, they should, by motion, authorize the hiring of Christopher Christy as a probationary police officer, at Step 1 of the current labor contract, at a monthly rate of$3,358.58, subject to the satisfactory completion of pre-employment medical and psychological examinations.
