CITY OF SHAKOPEE
Memorandum
TO: Mayor & City Council CONSENT
Mark McNeill, City Administrator
FROM: Bruce Loney, Public Works Director
SUBJECT: Consider Completion of C.R. 15 Sidewalk, from
Lions Park Tennis Courts to Vierling Drive with the
Vierling Drive Project No. 2002-4
DATE: April 20, 2004
INTRODUCTION:
Attached is a proposal to complete the County Road (C.R.) 15 sidewalk, from the Lions
Park tennis courts to Vierling Drive, from S.M. Hentges & Sons, Inc. for Council
consideration in adding this work to the Vierling Drive Improvement Project No. 2002-4
BACKGROUND:
S.M. Hentges & Sons, Inc. is the contractor for the Vierling Drive Improvement Project,
from C.R. 15 to Orchard Park West. Part of the work for this year is to complete the
sidewalk and bituminous trail work, as well as restoration work of turf for completion of
the project. In review of the Lions Park area, there is a segment of sidewalk that is not
connected along C.R. 15, from the Lions Park tennis courts to Vierling Drive. The
approximate length of this uncompleted segment is 482 feet and the cost received from
S.M. Hentges & Sons, Inc. to complete this segment is $11,165.30.
Staff brings this proposal to City Council for consideration to add this work to the
Vierling Drive improvement proj ect, even though this work was not included in the
project or in the CIP. Staff believes this is a fair price and an opportune time to complete
this work, which will complete the sidewalk and trail system for the public to utilize the
park or travel along collector streets in this area. Funding for this sidewalk would be
from the Capital Improvement Fund (CIF).
ALTERNATIVES:
1. Approve a motion to add the additional work for the C.R. 15 sidewalk, from the
Lions Park tennis courts to Vierling Drive, to the Vierling Drive Improvement
Project No. 2002-4 in the amount of $11,165.30 with funding from the City's
Capital Improvement Fund.
2. Do not add the C.R. 15 sidewalk at this time.
3. Table for additional information.
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends Alternative No.1, as the contractor is in the area and would be able to
complete the sidewalk system for use by the public to the Lions Park, Tahpah Park and
along C.R. 15 or Vierling Drive.
ACTION REQUESTED:
Approve a motion to add the additional work for the C.R. 15 sidewalk, from the Lions
Park tennis courts to Vierling Drive, to the Vierling Drive Improvement Project No.
2002-4 in the amount of $11,165.30 with funding from the City's Capital Improvement
Fund.
