CITY OF SHAKOPEE
Memorandum
TO: Mayor and City Council CONSENT
Mark McNeill, City Administrator ~
FROM: Tracy Schaefer, Assistant to the City Administrator
SUBJECT: Purchase Library Water Softener
DATE: June I, 2004
INTRODUCTION:
The Council is asked to approve the appropriate city staffto purchase a water softener for
the new Shakopee library.
BACKGROUND:
Since the library has been operational since November 2003, some items, not included in
the building contract have come to staffs attention. One of these items is the need for a
water softener. Although the Library does not have locker room facilities with showers
like the Police Department or Community Center, it is recommended that due to the high
mineral content in Shakopee' s water and to extend the lifetime of the piping in the
Shakopee Library that a water softener be installed.
The building humidifier manufacturer also recommended purchasing the water softener
to extend the life of the humidifier as well as plumbing fixtures like water faucets and
drinking fountains.
BUDGET IMP ACT:
Staff received quotes from different companies for purchasing, installation and salt
delivery of different systems. MN Plumbing and Heating in Shakopee had the best price
for purchase and installation of $3,405. The optional bulk salt delivery system would
cost $1,040; however, staff would not recommend the bulk salt delivery system since salt
usage will be low due to the low water use at the library. To save city money, city staff
will be able to maintain this function.
To date, approximately $208,864 remains in the library contingency fund, these funds
will allow the city to complete any remaining building issues.
RECOMMENDATION:
I recommend that the council approve the purchase of the water softener.
ACTION REQUIRED:
If the Council concurs, it should, by motion, authorize the appropriate City officials to
purchase a GE Osmonics water softener from MN Plumbing, excluding the bulk salt
delivery system, for $3,405.00.
