Subject: COPS Secure Our Schools Grant
Introduction
The Police Department is seeking authorization to make application to the U.S.
Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS Office)
for a COPS Secure Our Schools grant award.
Back~round
The COPS Office has allocated funds to be used for the development of school safety
resources. The funding will allow recipients the opportunity to establish and enhance a
variety of school safety equipment. School District #720 has expressed an interest in
purchasing security equipment for the Shakopee Senior High School and the Shakopee
Junior High School if the City were to be awarded the grant. This grant would provide an
excellent opportunity for the City and the School District to work as partners for the
betterment of our safe schools.
Bud~etlmpact
The Secure Our Schools grant requires a 50 percent match for any dollars awarded. The
school superintendent has asked the grant request be for a total of $50,000. If the City
were to get an award the School District would reimburse the City the $25,000 cash
match. Therefore, there would be no expense to the City, if we were awarded the grant.
Action Requested
If Council concurs, they should, by motion, authorize the appropriate City staff to make
application to the U.S. Department of Justice, COPS Office for a COPS Secure Our
Schools grant.
