Authorize Hiring of Public Works Maintenance Operators IS: E-. r CITY OF SHAKOPEE Memorandum CONSENT TO: Mayor & City Council Mark McNeill, City Administrator FROM: Bruce Loney, Public Works Director SUBJECT: Hiring of Maintenance Operators DATE: September 7, 2004 INTRODUCTION: The Public Works Maintenance Operator's candidates have been interviewed from the Scott County certification list to fill the positions that were included in the 2004 City Budget, and authorized by the City Council at its. May 4, 2004 Council meeting. The purpose of this agenda item is to recommend to the City Council to authorize the hiring of Robert Gieseke and Brian Theis to fill the Maintenance Operator's positions. BACKGROUND: Included in the 2004 Budget is fifteen Public Works Maintenance Operator's positions for the Public Works Department with two new positions included for 2004. Council authorized the advertisement for two Maintenance Operator's positions on May 4,2004. Staff utilized Scott County's Personnel Department for the selection process in determining the interview list. The interview panel consisted of the Public Works Director, Public Works Supervisor, Street Supervisor and Park Supervisor. The certification list included sixteen persons, in which six persons were interviewed. Besides those who were interviewed, three others selected jobs from other Cities, one did not show up for the interview, one could not be contacted for the interview and two others were previously interviewed from this list. After reviewing the results of the interviews, applications and reference checks, the recommendation from the interview panel is to hire Robert Gieseke and Brian Theis at Step One of the Public Work's Union Pay Schedule. Their anticipated starting date is September 27, 2004. These hirings would be contingent upon a successful pre-employment physical and background check. The starting wage is contingent upon whether a new contract is approved by the City Council, which is expected to be considered at the September 4, 2004 meeting. These positions are non-exempt positions and these employees are eligible for overtime pay. Both of these employees have agreed to starting at Step One of the Public Work's Union Pay Schedule, whatever that amount is at the time of their starting. RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends the hiring of Robert Gieseke and Brian Theis to the Public Work's Maintenance Operators positions.
