City of Shakopee
Memorandum
TO: Mayor, City Council
Mark McNeill, City Administrator
FROM: Tracy Schaefer, Assistant to the City Administrator
SUBJECT: Resolution No. 6110 - Resolution of Appreciation for the Library
Committee
DATE: September 7, 2004
Introduction
City Council is asked to accept Resolution No. 6110, a Resolution of Appreciation to the
Shakopee Library Committee for their efforts and planning of the new Shakopee Public
Library.
Background
The Library Committee began working with city staff during the summer of 2000, to
identify Shakopee's needs for a new library for now and well into the future. Meeting on
a regular basis, the library committee traveled to different cities to research and analyze
other public libraries throughout the Twin Cities and spent numerous hours identifying
the perfect place for Shakopee's new library to call home.
It was decided, after a lot of effort andresearch, that the current location was the best
place for the new library. Once that decision was made, the committee worked diligently
with city staff to chose an architect and develop design standards to meet community
library needs. Items like the skylights were added, because the committee wanted the
library to feel open and welcoming to the public. The downstairs meeting room was
added when the committee realized there was a lack of such public space.
In addition tothe Library Committee members, Anne Seifert, Peggy Hullander, Patty
Grunklee, Gini Wermerskirchen, Don McNeil, Sandra Perusich, Allen Bartyzal and Julie
McNeamey who volunteered their time and talents, staff also wants to recognize Scott
County Library staff Janet Williams, former Scott County Library Director, Vanessa
Birdsey, Scott County Library Director and Barb Hegfors, Shakopee Librarian. Without
their input and assistance, the new library would be missing many very valuable
elements.
Recommendation
City Council should offer Resolution 6110, a Resolution of Appreciation to the Library
Committee for their efforts and planning ofthe new Shakopee Public Library, and move
its adoption.
