CITY OF SHAKOPEE Memorandum TO: Mayor and City Council FROM: Mark McNeill, City Administrator SUBJECT: Deputy Police Chief Resignation - 15.E2. DATE: December 21, 2004 INTRODUCTION: The Council is asked to accept the resignation of Deputy Police Chief Jerry Poole effective January 4th. In this action, the Council is also asked to approve action impacting his accumulated sick leave. BACKGROUND: Jerry Poole was first hired by the City as a police officer in December 17, 1975. With more than 29 years that he has been employed with the City, he has served as a Patrol Officer and Sergeant, and, in 1992, he was appointed to the rank of Deputy Police Chief. He had indicated his desire to retire from the Shakopee Police Department, and has submitted a letter, requesting that this be effective January 4,2005. As part of the resignation, he has asked that the City address a situation that came about in 1992, when he was promoted to Deputy Police Chief. As a Sergeant, (and therefore part ofthat union), he was not credited with more than 100 hours of sick leave when that promotion took place. He has asked that he be made whole on that. After some discussion, it is recommended that the City will bring his current accumulated balance of 928 hours, up to the maximum allowed for severance purposes - 960 hours. While the actual number of hours may vary somewhat ifthere is usage during his last two weeks, it is unlikely that that will amount to much. RECOMMENDATION: I recommend that the City Council authorize the 960-hour sick leave balance, and that Jerry Poole's resignation as Deputy Police Chief is accepted with regret, effective January 4,2005. ACTION REQUESTED: If the Council concurs, it should, by motion, accept with regret the resignation of Jerry Poole as Deputy Police Chief, effective January 4,2005, and authorize sick leave balance at 960 hours for the purposes of severance benefits. , nAdl ~ Mark McNeill City Administrator MM:th CC: Marilyn Remer Civil Service Commission Jerry Poole Dan Hughes ./S-t?2 SHAKOPEE JERRY POOLE .
