CITY OF SHAKOPEE
MEMORANDUM
To: Mayor and City Council
Mark McNeill, City Administrator
From: Mark Themig, Parks, Recreation and Facilities Director
Brad Eller, Recreation Supervisor
Meeting Date: February 1, 2005
Subject: Creation of Accessibility Task Force, Resolution No. 6180
INTRODUCTION
In order to create a more permanent city record, Council is asked to adopt Resolution
No. 6180, A Resolution Creating the Accessibility Task Force.
BACKGROUND AND DISCUSSION
In October 2004, City Council authorized the creation of an accessibility task force to
assist the city with implementing the action steps set forth in the 2004 accessibility study.
We advertised for resident participation on the task force, and received six volunteers:
Audrey Brown
Mark Brown
Jennifer Clark
Brad King
Carla Kress
Arvid Sornberger
Patricia Tietz
Audrey, Mark, Jennifer, Brad, Arid, and Patricia all either have a disability or have a
family member with a disability. Carla is a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist for the City
of Eden Prairie and very knowledgeable on accessibility issues.
The task force has had two introductory meetings, and will begin the more detailed work
laid out in the accessibility study in February. Their preliminary schedule is as follows:
February: Transition plan self evaluation
March-April: Programs and services that the city offers
May: Communications and forms
June: Employee awareness and Training
July: Transportation, special events, emergency procedures
I would anticipate that there will be periodic action items from these meetings that come
to Council for discussion.
Finally, we metwith staff responsible for implementing the Priority 1 corrections from the
accessibility study that Council directed last year. At your February 14 meeting, we will
have an update on the status of those corrections.
