POLICE DEPARTMENT
Memorandum CONSEr~T
TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council
Mark McNeill, City Administrator
FROM: Dan Hughes, Chief of Police
SUBJECT: Ordinance Amending Chapter 9, Section 9.42 Regulating
Unattended Vehicles
DATE: February 24, 2005
INTRODUCTION:
Council is asked to consider amending the attached ordinance, Ordinance No. 725, Fourth
Series. An Ordinance of the City of Shako pee, Minnesota, amending City Code Chapter
9, Section 9.42 regulating unattended vehicles.
BACKGROUND:
Councilor Lehman asked that I research the possibility of changing our unattended
vehicle ordinance, which would allow the use of remote vehicle starters. When the
ordinance was originally written, remote vehicle starters were not available. The new
language, which is underlined, would address Councilor Lehman's concerns.
Additional new language, also underlined, exempts fire, police and emergency vehicles
from this ordinance. Emergency vehicles routinely must maintain appropriate
temperatures so that life-saving equipment and computers function properly.
RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Offer Ordinance No. 725, Fourth Series, an ordinance of the City of Shako pee,
Minnesota, amending City Code Chapter 9, Section 9.42 regulating unattended vehicles,
and move its adoption.
