HomeMy WebLinkAbout5.A. Approval to add 4 additional positions to Shakopee Fire Department roster, bringing total to 54 firefighters 5.4, CITY OF SHAKOPEE Memorandum TO: Mayor and City Council Mark McNeill, City Administrator FROM: Ed Schwaesdall, Fire Chief DATE: March 17,2005 RE: Approval to add four (4}additional positions to the Shakopee Fire Department roster, bringing the total to 54 firefighters INTRODUCTION: The Shakopee Fire Department is requesting to raise the maximum number of firefighters allotted by the City from 50 to 54 due to 11 firefighters applying and making it through the first two phases of the interview process. BACKGROUND: The Shakopee Fire Department has the ability to fill the allotted vacancies with the possibility of being able to expand the roster number to 54 due to the number of applications the department has received and interviewed. The Shakopee Fire Department has 7 vacant positions open at the current time and has the possibility of many positions becoming vacant in the near future with so many firefighters reaching their retirement status on the department. BUDGET IMP ACT: The four additional positions are not budgeted for 2005. However, by the time the positions would be filled, it will be at minimum the first of May; there would be, therefore, 28 months of firefighter pay available (7 vacancies x 4 months). In addition, I anticipate retirements of two firefighters in August. Therefore, the existing budget should be able to accommodate the additional four positions in 2005. ACTION REQUESTED: At this time I am asking the City Council to approve the addition of four more positions so the Shakopee Fire Department may hire all 11 applicants who applied to the Shakopee Fire Department.
