Re: Amend Fire Fighter Job Description
BACKGROUND:
The City maintains job descriptions for its position classifications. The job descriptions
are reviewed and updated as necessary to reflect the skills and background requirements
l}ecessary to perform the responsibilities of the job.
INFORMATION:
Job descriptions are utilized in the recruitment process to create the advertisements and
po stings to aide in attracting candidates with the best talent and ability, therefore it is
crucial the job description is current and accurate. Staffis recommending the fire fighter
job description be amended to specifically list the minimum qualifications required to fill
that position and include other current requirements and procedures.
The requirement of a high school diploma or the equivalent is being added back to the job
description. It had been in a previous job description, however, for unknown reasons, it
was not included in the current version updated in 2003. The requirement of satisfactory
completion of fitness/agility tests, background checks, physiological evaluations, physical
examinations, drug testing and the completion of special fire fighter classes are listed as
Other Requirements. Also added is the 35% minimum attendance requirement so
potential candidates will be aware of the time commitment involved.
ACTION REQUESTED
If Council concurs, it should, by motion approve the City of Shakopee Job Description
for Fire Fighter dated 5/17/05.
CITY OF SHAKO PEE
Job Description
Job Title: Firefighter
Department: Fire
Shift: On-call
Accountable To: Fire Chief
Salary: $10.00/hour per call
Approved: May 17,2005
Approved by: City Council
Primary Objective of Position
To extinguish and prevent fires, to effectuate rescues, render first aid to persons, respond to and control
hazardous materials incidents, and respond to other such emergencies as required.
Essential Functions of the Position
Upon emergency alarm, must respond immediately to the fire station, staff the appropriate apparatus, and
respond with other firefighters to the emergency.
Must have physical ability to independently operate two-way radios in field operations, operate and
handle all hand and power tools independently, perform first aid and CPR to the public and other
firefighters during emergencies.
Must have the ability to quickly read and interpret hazard warnings and labels in emergency situations.
Must have the ability to quickly and effectively communicate with the public and other firefighters during
emergencies.
Must have the ability to make immediate decisions in emergency situations and must have the ability to.
effectively give directives to members of the public in emergency situations.
Must be able to respond to a wide variety of emergency situations at any hour of the day. Must be able to
work effectively under extreme environmental and psychological stress for extended periods.
Must be physically capable of climbing multiple flights of stairs in full protective gear, lifting and
transporting fire hose in response to a fire call.
Must be physically capable of dragging charged hose lines and opening charged hose lines during fires.
Must be physically capable to lift, transport, drag, or carry members of the public and other firefighters to
safety in emergency situations.
Minimum Qualifications
. High School Diploma or general education degree (GED)
. Must be 18 years of age or older.
. Must possess a valid Class D Drivers License
. Must live within a six (6) mile radius of the fire station (or any proposed fire. station) and be
within the Shakopee, Louisville Township, Jackson Township Fire District.
. Must work within a ten (10) mile radius of the fire station (or any proposed fire station) or have
the ability to respond to the closest fire station within 15 minutes of the initial call.
. Must be able to meet minimum attendance requirements; (35% total attendance record of all paid
emergency calls and regular drills per quarter.)
Other Requirements
Must have the ability to obtain:
. Satisfactory completion of fitness agility testing
. Satisfactory completion of a background check
. Satisfactory completion of a physiological evaluation
. Satisfactory completion of a physical examination
. Satisfactory completion of a drug test
. Satisfactory completion of a First Responder Class including CPR Training and Fire
Fighter 1 & 2 Classes with Minnesota State Fire Certification within one year of hire.
Must be able to read and write the English language effectively.
