CITY OF SHAKOPEE r
MEMORANDUM
To: Mayor and City Council
Mark McNeill, City Administrator
From: Sarah Foley, Recreation Supervisor
Meeting Date: December 4, 2012
Subject: Fitness Equipment Purchase
ACTION SOUGHT
If Council concurs, move to authorize the purchase of 16 new group cycle bikes with
feedback consoles, in the amount of $19,814.62, from 2 Wind Exercise, Inc.
INTRODUCTION
City Council is asked to authorize the purchase of 16 new group cycling bikes with
feedback consoles to replace the 16 current cycling bikes.
BACKGROUND AND DISCUSSION
Currently we have 16 Schwinn Evolution group cycle bikes without consoles that were
purchased near the end of 2006. These pieces of equipment have continuous needs for
maintenance and are nearing the end of their life expectancy. In addition, the trend with
group cycling is to have feedback consoles that will allow individual participants to track
their RPM's, speed, power, etc., as well as allow instructors a greater variety of teaching
options when creating their classes.
The 2012 operating budget contains $20,000 for upgrading fitness equipment. We
currently have a room with limited space to conduct our group cycling classes that is
close to its capacity for the number of bikes that can be comfortably housed in the area.
Therefore, I am recommending a scenario that would replace the current group cycle
bikes that we currently have with the same number of upgraded cycle bikes along with
feedback consoles.
Proposed Equipment
We have obtained the following quotes:
Company Items Bid
2nd Wind • 16 Lemond Revmaster 19,814.62
Exercise, Inc. Pro Spin Bikes with 16 (includes freight, fuel,
Lemond Pilot Cadence installation, and tax)
Meters
LifeFitness • 15 Group Exercise 19,969.28
LifeCycle Bike with (includes freight, fuel,
consoles installation, removal of old bikes,
• Bid includes the cost and tax)
minus the trade -in value
of current 16 bikes
2nd Wind, Inc. • 18 Lemond Revmaster 19,803.89
Pro Spin Bikes (includes freight, fuel,
installation, and tax)
LifeFitness • 16 Group Exercise 19,916.03
LifeCycle Bikes (includes freight, fuel,
• Bid includes the cost installation, removal of old bikes,
minus the trade -in value and tax)
of current 16 bikes
With this information, we are recommending the purchase of the 16 Lemond Revmaster
Pro Spin bikes and consoles from 2nd Wind Exercise. This will allow us to upgrade our
current equipment as well as add the feedback consoles which are now an industry
standard while not decreasing the number of bikes we currently have.
BUDGET IMPACT
The city has budgeted $20,000 for fitness enhancements in 2012. $19,814.62 will be
used for the purchase of 16 group cycle bikes which leaves us with a $185.38 balance.
The equipment would be ordered in December for delivery in January.
VISIONING RELATIONSHIP
The upgrade of fitness equipment will help ensure the long -term viability of the City's
commitment of looking to the future for the good of our community and an investment
that will serve our residents, employees, and guests in the years to come. With this in
mind, this action appears to meet the following aspects of the City's vision:
A Keep Shakopee a safe and healthy community where residents can pursue
active and quality lifestyles.
B Positively manage the challenges and opportunities presented by growth,
development, and change.
