Memorandum
TO: Mayor and City Council
Mark McNeill, City Administrator
FROM: Kris Wilson, Assistant City Administrator
SUBJECT: Authorization to Purchase Fire Station Air Compressor
DATE: December 15, 2011
Introduction:
The City Council is asked to authorize the purchase of an air compressor for the new Fire
Station that is currently under construction.
Background:
One of the items that needs to be purchased directly by the City for the new Fire Station is
a fresh air purification breathing air compressor; fill station and storage tanks for use in
filling firefighter's SCBA tanks.
Earlier this year the project architect, Oertel Architects, solicited price quotes for the
compressor on the City's behalf. Two quotes were received.
1. Alex Air Apparatus, Inc. quoted a Bauer brand compressor for $39,050.00.
2. Municipal Emergency Services, Inc. (MES) quoted a Scott brand compressor for
$39,263.55.
The Fire Department prefers the Scott compressor, despite the slightly higher price ($212
more), because the Department's air tanks are Scott brand tanks and because the
compressor has more automated features which allow for more efficient filling of the tanks.
Budget Impact
This item is a budgeted component of the project, as presented to the Council at their
March 1 meeting when the construction contract was awarded, and the quoted prices are
both within the allocated budget.
Relationship to Visioning:
This is a housekeeping item.
Requested Action:
If the Council concurs, it is asked to authorize the purchase of a Scott brank air compressor
from Municipal Emergency Services, Inc. at a total cost not to exceed $40,000.
