MEMORANDUM
To: Mayor and City Council
Mark McNeill, City Administrator
From: Jeff Tate, Chief of Police / Emergency Management Director
Meeting Date: August 21, 2012
Subject: Payment to the Scott County Meth Task Force
Action Souqht
The Council is asked to offer a motion authorizing payment of$1,500.00 from the
Shakopee Police Department's drug forfeiture fund to the Meth Task Force for drug
prevention presentations in the Shakopee School District.
Backqround
The Meth Task Force has been committed to educating our youth in areas of drug abuse
and prevention. The Meth Task Force continues to provide students with anti-
methamphetamine and anti-gateway drug information through presentations of CLIMB
Theater. This year, CLIMB Theater has rewritten their presentation to include heroin.
The current cost to conduct these presentations in the Shakopee School District is
approximately $9,000. The $1,500.00 from the police department's drug forfeiture fund
would go to off-set some of those costs. City Council authorized the same contribution
in 2009, 2010 and 2011.
The Meth Task Force has surveyed teachers after these presentations. Past results
show that 97 percent of teachers found this program to be of value to the students. The
Shakopee Police Department feels there is significance in these presentations, and we
believe they are making a difference.
Budqet Impact
The funds requested will come from the police departmenYs drug forfeiture fund. Funds
exist to support this action.
