CITY OF SHAKOPEE MEMORANDUM '" ��� ��_�'� �° ` �s����� � To: Mayor and City Council Mark McNeill, City Administrator From: Jamie Polley, Director of Parks, Recreation & Natural Resources Meeting Date: August 21, 2012 Subject: Approve Use of Park Reserve Funds for Park Improvements ACTION REQUESTED The City Council is asked to approve the use of$5,000 by the Shakopee Lions Club from the Lions Park land sale proceeds held in the Park Reserve to make improvements to Lions Park. INTRODUCTION The Lions Club would like to construct a new outdoor grilling area at Lions Park in anticipation of their 50'h Anniversary Celebration on September 15th, 2012. BACKGROUND In May of 2003 the City Council moved to split the excess funds from the land sale adjacent to Lions Park between the Park Reserve Fund for Lions Park and the other 50% would go towards the City's assessments on Vierling Dr. The amount deposited in to the Park Reserve Fund for Lions Park was $41,761.00. Since 2003 the Lions Club has allocated these funds to a variety of improvements in Lions Park. In 2007 they allocated $5,000 towards the renovation of the Lions Park bathrooms and $6,000 towards improvements to the Ice Arena. In addition, the City Council approved the use of$4,500 of these funds to be used by the Lions Club to assist in funding the installation of irrigation on the infields of a few of the softball diamonds in Tahpah Park. DISCUSSION In anticipation of the Lions Club's 50t" Anniversary Celebration on September 15`h, 2012 the Lions Club would like to construct a new outdoor grilling area by Shelter#1 in Lions Park. The current grill is directly north of the shelter and is deteriorating structuraily. The Lions Ciub has met with City staff and would like to move the shelter slightly to the east and install a new grilling area. The existing grilling area will be removed. The estimated cost to install new footings, new concrete slab, and a new grilling station is $5,000. The Lions Club is requesting that the funding come from the Lions Park Fund in the Park Reserve. REQUESTED ACTION The City Council, if concurs, motion to approve the funding of $5,000 for the construction of a new outdoor grilling station to be utilized from the Lions Park land sale proceeds currently held in the Park Reserve Fund.
