FROM: R. Michael Leek, Community Development Director
SUBJECT: Shakopee Marketing Development Proposal by Minnesota School of
Business
MEETING DATE: July 19, 2011
INTRODUCTION:
The EDA is asked affirm the EDAC decision to move forward with a marketing
development work plan developed by Minnesota School of Business students under the
direction of Richard Anderson, Business Chair for the school.
DISCUSSION:
Staff and the EDAC had begun the process of soliciting proposals from professional firms
to develop a marketing strategy for the City of Shakopee. Shortly after this processhad
begun EDAC member Paul Youngs made contact with Minnesota School of Business
Chair, Richard Anderson, regarding whether there would be any opportunities to
partner with the school and its business students on the development of a Shakopee
marketing plan. This contact was followed up on by the Community Development
Director. It resulted in a proposal from a student team from the school. An initial
proposal was presented to the EDAC and discussed at their May 25 meeting. After the
presentation and discussion, the EDAC directed city staff to continue to work with the
student team toward presentation of a full work plan at the EDAC meeting of June 15,
2011. A copy of the presentation in handout form is attached to this memorandum for
the EDA's information.
As can be seen from the handouts the work of the Minnesota School of Business team is
scheduled to be complete by September of this year. There are no direct monetary
costs for this project, but will be staff costs to assist with and direct the project on
behalf of the City.
It is expected that, even with the Minnesota School of Business project, there may be
elements of marketing implementation in the future that might be carried out by with
the assistance of professional firms once the project is complete and with the approval
of the EDA (e.g. website redesign, marketing materials development and printing).
