Acceptance of $3,0001"I FROM: SUBJECT: DATE: INTRODUCTION: CITY OF SHAK ®PEE 0-19 POLICE DEPARTMENT Memorandum Honorable Mayor, City Council, Mark McNeill, City Administrator Chris Dellwo, Captain Request to Accept Monetary Award by Resolution Number 7102 June 7, 2011 City Council is asked to adopt Resolution Number 7102, a Resolution to accept a monetary award in the amount of $3,000 from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety's Office of Traffic Safety. The $3,000 will be used to purchase a night vision monocular. BACKGROUND: The Shakopee Police Department has formed a strong partnership with the Minnesota Department of Public Safety and has received grant funds over the past several years to assist on continuous traffic safety enforcement efforts. The Minnesota Department of Public Safety's Office of Traffic Safety recognized the Shakopee Police Departments efforts and requested we submit our 2010 enforcement efforts in the area of DWI, speed, and seatbelt /child restraint violations for recognition. Due to our efforts, the Office of Traffic Safety has awarded the Shakopee Police Department $3,000 to use toward an equipment purchase. The redemption period for this purchase is May 10, 2011 through June 30, 2011. VISIONING RELATIONSHIP: This action supports: Goal C — Maintain the City's Strong Financial Health. Strategy 6: Provide high quality services ACTION REQUESTED: If City Council concurs, it should, by motion, adopt Resolution No. 7102, a Resolution of the City of Shakopee, Minnesota, accepting a monetary award in the amount of $3,000 from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety's Office of Traffic Safety, and move its adoption. Resolution No. 7102 RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING ACCEPTANCE OF A TRAFFIC SAFETY AWARD Whereas, the Shakopee Police Department desired to protect the health of its citizens by improving traffic safety and participating in the Safe & Sober Challenge; and Whereas, under the provision of the Highway Safety Act (P.L. 89 -563), the Minnesota Department of Public Safety has federal funding to promote traffic safety; and Whereas, the Minnesota Department of Public Safety had judged the Shakopee Police Department's efforts to decrease impaired driving and increase seat belt use to be exceptional, and wants to reward those efforts by providing additional funding for the department; Therefore, be it resolved that the Shakopee Police Department enter into an agreement with the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, Office of Traffic Safety, for the period from May 10, 2011 to June 30, 2011. The Chief of Shakopee is hereby authorized to execute such agreements as are necessary to implement the project on behalf of the Shakopee Police Department. Be it further resolved that the Chief of Shakopee is hereby authorized to be the fiscal agent and administer the grant on behalf of the Shakopee Police Department.
