FROM: Kris Wilson, Assistant City Administrator
SUBJECT: Authorization to Hire One New Mechanic
DATE: April 29, 2011

C NS
INTRODUCTION:
The City Council is asked to authorize the hiring of Jesse Wilson as a Mechanic in the Fleet
Division of the Public Works Department.
BACKGROUND:
At its April 5 meeting, the City Council authorized filling the vacant full -time position in the
Fleet Division with a mechanic rather than a mechanic's apprentice. Since the City has
advertised for the position of mechanic within the past 6 months and had several strong
candidates from that process, we did not re- advertise. Instead, the individuals who ranked
second and third in that process were invited back for an additional interview. Reference checks
and background checks were also completed on both candidates.
RECOMMENDATION:
The interview panel recommends that Jesse Wilson be hired a full -time mechanic at Step 1
($21.19 per hour) of the current union contract, contingent upon the successful completion of a
pre - employment physical and drug test and subject to a one -year probationary period. The
anticipated start date for Mr. Wilson would be on or about May 31, 2011.
BUDGET IMPACT:
Funding for this position, at the mechanic level, is available within the Fleet Division's 2011
adopted budget.
RELATIONSHIP TO VISION:
This agenda item relates to Goal E: Deliver effective and efficient public services by a staff of
well- trained, caring and professional employees.
ACTION REQUESTED:
If the Council concurs, it should offer a motion to authorize the hiring of Jesse Wilson as a full -
time mechanic, at Step 1 ($21.19 per hour) of the current union contract, contingent upon the
successful completion of a pre - employment physical and drug test and subject to a one -year
probationary period.
