H: \CC\2011 \05 -03 \surplus property - historic bricks.docx Mark Noble Planner II INTRODUCTION: The City recently received a request from Roger Hensen to purchase bricks that the Historic Preservation Advisory Commission (HPAC) has been salvaging from demolished structures over the past several years. The bricks are typically from older homes that were constructed of bricks manufactured in Shakopee in the late 1800's /early 1900's. One of the purposes of salvaging these bricks is for reuse in existing Shakopee brick houses that are being renovated /preserved and are in need of bricks to replace those on the structure that are in disrepair or are missing entirely. HISTORIC PRESERVATION ADVISORY COMMISSION RECOMMENDATION: On Monday, April 11, 2011, the Historic Preservation Advisory Commission reviewed a request to purchase approx. 75 bricks for use on an existing house (904 2nd Avenue East) that is being renovated. The HPAC concurred that they were supportive of the request, and recommended that the City Council agree to sell salvaged bricks for $1.00 each to the individual requesting them. They felt that this was an appropriate use of these bricks, and that the price was sufficient to cover any costs the City may have incurred in salvaging them. They also believe that the reuse of the brick for the property in question would improve the appearance of the property and the improvement will better reflect the historic character of the neighborhood.
