Re-furbishing Lions Park Picnic Shelters 1 and 2CITY OF SHAKOPEE MEMORANDUM TO: Mayor & City Council Mark McNeill, City Administrator Bruce Loney, Public Works Director FROM: Michael Hullander, Public Works Superintendent DATE: April 5, 2011 SUBJECT: Re- furbishing Lions Park Picnic Shelters 1 and 2. INTRODUCTION: The Park Maintenance Division identified a need in the Park Asset Fund to re- furbish Shelter 2 at Lions Park. The work includes replacing the roof, fascia, soffits and new cedar plywood for the underside of the trusses. Staff estimated $15,000.00 for this work. DISCUSSION: Park maintenance staff held a meeting with the Lions Club to inform them of the work being proposed for the replacement of the roof along with other work to re- furbish Shelter 2. At the meeting they were informed of our wishes to eliminate the asphalt shingles and reversed mansard and replace with a colored steel roofing material. They were very receptive to the idea but had two requests: 1. The color not be red. 2. We consider replacing the roof at Shelter 1, as it now leaks, and is in need of replacement. With the materials estimate we received, staff believes we can re- furbish Shelter 1 and 2 with the $15,000.00 we estimated in the Park Asset Fund. The Lions Club was made aware that we only budgeted $15,000 for the project and is willing to donate $2,500.00 out of the Lion's Club escrow account with the City to keep us within budget. The Lions Club also volunteered to tear off the old roofs so we can complete both shelters this year. Staff will bring a resolution to Council in the near future to accept this donation and is currently working with the Club to make sure their volunteers are insured. ALTERNATIVES: 1. Approve a motion directing staff to continue to work with the Lion's Club on re- furbishing Shelter No. 1 & No. 2 at Lion's Park, with the funding of the project to be expended from the Park Asset Fund. 2. Do not approve a motion to re- furbish Shelter No. 1 & No. 2 at Lion's Park at this time. 3. Table for additional information. S.C.3, RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends going forward with the re furbishing of Shelters 1 and 2 at Lions Park. ACTION REQUESTED: Move to direct staff to continue to work with the Lions Club on re- furbishing Shelters 1 and 2 at Lions Park, with the funding to be expended from the Park Asset Fund.
