Public Works 13 Public Works Department Engineering Division 2013 Budget Information Engineering Division Overview: The Engineering Division within the Public Works is responsible for the following activities: • Prepare plans, specifications and bidding documents for public improvement projects • Prepare preliminary engineering reports per assessment projects • Inspect public improvement projects to ensure compliance with City Specifications • Perform or oversee the required testing for all public improvements • Update State Aid Data and prepare the necessary reports to preserve Municipal State Aid Funding • Review of Private Developments, CUP's • Wetland Conservation Act Administration • Review of commercial building permits • Grading permits • Provide engineering and mapping assistance to other departments • Manage the City's GIS System • Traffic Safety Review Committee /Transportation Studies • Coordinate with Mn/DOT, Scott County, MCES, SMSC, Union Pacific Railroad, SPUC, School District and Watershed Organizations Staffing: Current staffing for 2012 and proposed for 2013: • Public Works Director (60 %) • Assistant City Engineer • Project Engineer • 2 Engineering Tech. IV • GIS Specialist • Engineering Secretary (75 %) • Engineering Intern 14 Budget: • Personnel costs are increased due to wage & benefit increases • Supplies and Services are decreased by reductions in professional services and training Looking Ahead to Next Year Potential 2013 Projects • 2013 Street Reconstruction Project • 2013 Bituminous Overlay • CSAH 17 Reconstruction • Valley View Road Improvements • L -16 Improvements • East Shakopee Sewer Extension • CSAH 17 / Vierling Drive Intersection Design • Miscellaneous Cleaning and Erosion Control Projects Potential for Private Developments, however, it is difficult to project. If additional staff is needed, consultant assistance would be utilized. Potential expansion of GIS services with police and fire. Coordination with Shakopee Public Utilities will continue in 2013.
