CITY OF SHAKOPEE Memorandum � ��,����� �I TO: Mayor and City Council Mark McNeill, City Administrator FROM: Kris Wilson, Assistant City Administrator� SUBJECT: Authorization to Hire Police Records Technician DATE: May 10, 2012 INTRODUCTION: The Police Department is requesting Council approval to fill one of two vacancies for a Police Records Technician. BACKGROUND: The Police Department currently has two vacant Records Technician positions. The Police Civil Service Commission recently conducted the necessary recruitment and testing process to establish an eligible register, which is composed of the following three individuals (listed in alphabetical order): Claudia Cassman Michele Lawrence Brenda Lind Minnesota State Statute Chapter 419 requires the Police Civil Service Commission to submit the top three names listed on the eligible register to the Appointing Authority (City Council), to fill any vacancy. BUDGETIMPACT: Funding for this position is included in the Police Department's adopted budget for 2012. RELATIONSHIP TO VISION: This relates to item E: Deliver effective and efficient public services by a staff of well-trained, caring and professional employees. RECOMMENDATION: The Police Department is currently finalizing a background check on the preferred candidate and anticipates having that completed in time for Tuesday evening's meeting. Therefore a specific recommendation for hire will be provided on the table at that time. �. � . �. BACKGROUND: The Police Department currently has two vacant Records Technician positions. The Police Civil Service Commission recently conducted the necessary recruitment and testing process to establish an eligible register, which is composed of the following three individuals (listed in alphabetical order): Claudia Cassman Michele Lawrence Brenda Lind Minnesota State Statute Chapter 419 requires the Police Civil Service Commission to submit the top three names listed on the eligible register to the Appointing Authority (City Council), to fill any vacancy. RECOMMENDATION: Chief Tate recommends that Claudia Cassman be hired for the position of Police Records Technician, at Step E of Grade 3 of 2012 Non-Union Pay Plan, subject to successful completion of the required pre-employment physical / drug-test and psychological evaluation. BUDGET IMPACT: Funding for this position is included in the Police Department's adopted budget for 2012. RELATIONSHIP TO VISION: This relates to item E: Deliver effective and efficient public services by a staff of well-trained, caring and professional employees. REQUESTED ACTION: If the Council concurs, it is asked to offer a motion to hire Claudia Cassman as a Police Records Technician, at Step E of Grade 3 of the 2012 Non-Union Pay Plan, contingent upon successful completion of the required pre-employment screenings.
