CITY OF SHAKOPEE
Memorandum
TO: Mayor and City Council

FROM: Kris Wilson, Assistant City Administrator ,;'
L,
SUBJECT: Authorization to Hire Administration Department Secretary
DATE: May 11, 2012
Introduction
The City Council is asked to authorize the hiring of a full-time Secretary for the Administration
Department.
Background:
In late February, the Administration Department's part-time Office Service Worker was
promoted to the position of Secretary with the Engineering Department. The administrative
support position in Administration was then re-evaluated and classified as a full-time Secretary
position, utilizing funds saved by the merger of the City Clerk's Office and Finance Department,
to cover the cost difference on this position as well as the cost of the new Secretary position in
the Finance Department.
Both secretarial positions were advertised, a large of number of applications were reviewed and
16 candidates were interviewed.
Recommendation
Staff has selected a very strong candidate for the position with the Administration Department;
however she also received an alternative job offer from another employer on the same day. The
candidate is currently weighing both opportunities and will be letting us know if she remains
interested in the City's position prior to Tuesday evening's Council meeting.
If the response is positive, staff will have a memo on the table seeking authorization to hire this
individual.
