DATE: April 3, 2012 INTRODUCTION: In December, 2011, the control cabinet was struck by a vehicle and damaged to the point that requires replacement of the cabinet. Staff had our traffic engineer prepare the attached proposal for contractors to submit a quote. This Council agenda item is to approve the low quote for the Vierling Drive at Heather Street Traffic Signal Cabinet Replacement. BACKGROUND: Quotes were received and are shown as follows and per attachments: 1. Egan Company $21,545.00 2. EMI $22,500.00 3. Killmer Electric $23,279.00 Staff would recommend awarding the low quote to Egan Company of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota. Funding of the work would be from the General Fund, Street Maintenance Division and a budget amendment may be necessary as this expenditure was unforeseen. ALTERNATIVES: 1. Approve a motion awarding a quote to Egan Company for the Vierling Drive at Heather Street Traffic Signal Cabinet Replacement. 2. Do not approve the low quote at this time. 3. Table for additional information. RECOMMENDATION: Staff would recommend awarding a contract to Egan Company. Once the cabinet replacement work is done, Public Works staff will install bollards to protect the new cabinet. ACTION REQUESTED: 1. Hwy. 169 New Hope, MN 55428 Re: Vierling Drive at Heather Street Traffic Signal Cabinet Replacement Shakopee, Minnesota Dear Mr. LeBonne: The City of Shakopee is requesting that you provide a quote on the above-referenced project. The existing traffic signal cabinet was damaged and is in need of replacement. The City is requesting that the existing cabinet be removed and replaced with a similar type MnDOT approved cabinet. The existing intersection wiring shall be disconnected in the cabinet and protected until the new cabinet is installed. The existing cabinet components shall be salvaged and reused in the new cabinet. The new cabinet shall be installed on the existing concrete foundation. The salvaged cabinet components and existing wiring shall be re-connected/re-installed in the cabinet to make the traffic signal system operational. The contractor will be responsible for insuring that the traffic signal system is complete and operational with the new cabinet. The existing traffic signal can be turned off with the installation of a temporary all way stop control. All traffic control required, including installation of the temporary traffic control, for the replacement of cabinet shall be incidental to the work being competed, and no additional compensation shall be made. The contractor shall provide evidence of ordering the new cabinet within two days from notice to proceed. Following receipt of the cabinet, the contractor will be required to complete all work and have the system operational within one week. Attached to this letter is a copy of the existing traffic signal system plans. The City is requesting that each company interested in providing a quote visit the site prior to submitting the quote. The Contractor will be required to follow all aspects of the City of Shakopee Standards and Specifications and provide insurance information to the City.
