i 'i , r • ' CITY OF SHAKOPEE Memorandum TO: Mayor and City Council FROM: Mark McNeill, City Administrator ' SUBJECT Resolution of Support-Minnesota Vikings Stadium DATE: January 17, 2012 I Comment: ' Introduction: i j Mayor Brad Tabke has asked that the Council adopt a resolution of support for the ! I construction of Minnesota Vikings Stadium in Shakopee. ' Background: ! On January 11 th , Mayor Tabke and representatives of the Shakopee Chamber of ' Commerce, local legislators, and the "savethevikes.org" organization, unveiled a plan for i a Vikings football stadium to be located on the land located east of Valley Park Drive and south of Minnesota Highway 101. The sites had previously been occupied by ADC and i Conklin. , i ' They cited the reasons for this location being superior to other sites in Minneapolis and Arden Hills: ' • Infrastructure is already in place 'i i • Transportation upgrades would be relatively small, at least compared to other sites; • A small number of willing sellers ' Financing package which, while dependent upon the Legislature, would eliminate , the need for impact on property taxes; ; • Shakopee's location relative to the Vikings training facility, and summer training camp, and fan base in the west metropolitan area; , • Shakopee's experience as an entertainment destination, which currently hosts ! ; approximately six million visitors each year to regional entertainment venues in ' and around Shakopee. The press packet outlining further details of the proposal is attached. This information , was delivered to Governor Dayton following the press conference on January 1 l Mayor Tabke acknowledges that there are many details which will have to be worked ' ! out. However, he is confident that this can become a reality, and the Shakopee location is very competitive to the other existing proposals. i i Recommendation: I He asks that Council adopt the attached resolution of support. i I I i Relationship to Visioning: A Shakopee location for this stadium could be seen as supporting Goal B-Positively manage the challenges and opportunities presented by growth, development, and change; and Goal D—Maintain, improve, and create strong partnerships with other public and private sector entities. Action Required: ' I If the Council concurs with Mayor Tabke's request, it should, by motion, adopt the i following Resolution No. 7161: i i I A Resolution of Suppot of a Stadium to be Constl^ucted in Shakopee, Minnesota. i i ' i ! i i i i .LC} }.-Qi ' L ., i I 1Vlark McNeill , Mlll:cn City Administrator i i . i I i I I i i , i i i I i I I I I i ------------------------------ ------------ - , I i I RESOLUTION NO. 7161 ' i ' A RESOLUTION OF SUPPORT OF A STADIUM TO BE CONSTRUCTED 1N ' SHAKOPEE, MINNESOTA i I WHEREAS the Minnesota Vikin s rofessional football team is o eratin under ; , g P P g ; ! a lease which has expired with the Metropolitan Sports Facilities Commission for use of ! the Hubert H.
