SUBJECT: Door Replacement on Engineering Building I
DATE: January 13, 2012
,
 Introduction I
The City Council is asked to authorize proceeding with replacement of the overhead and service
doors on the City building located at 500 Gorman St. The building currently houses the offices
of the Engineering Division plus storage and shop space for the Public Works Department.
Background '
The building at 500 Gorman St. has 17 overhead doors and 12 service doors, which are all at
least 25 yeaxs old and in various need of replacement. Replacing the doors will provide benefits '
in the areas of security, safety and energy efficiency. The old doors lack insulating properties,
as well as common safety features present on the City's other overhead doors. One door that
would not be replaced would be the main entrance into the office area, as that door was replaced
in 2006 when the Engineering Division moved in.
The project is proposed to be completed in two parts — the overhead doors and the service doors.
Overhead Doors !
Staff has obtained two price quotes for replacement of the 17 overhead doors, to include new
doors, door hardware, and garage door openers. The quotes also cover removal and disposal of
the old doors and professional installation of the new doors. The lowest price quote is $63,004
from Lake Country Doors.
Service Doors
I Staff proposes to purchase news doors and door hardware for the 12 service doors and have them
installed by staff from the Public Works Department to save on costs. Based on the cost of two
similar doors replaced on another City building in 201 l, staff estimates that the materials to
replace 12 service doors will total somewhere between $9,000 and $10,000.
Budget Impact !
Funding for this project is available in the Building Fund and was included in the 2012 Building
Fund plan that was presented to the City Council last October.
