Authorize Purchase of Vehicle for Building Inspections ____ _ CITY OF SHAKOPEE MEMORANDUM i TO: Mayor & City Council Mark McNeill, City Administratar ° - .r , ,, " '. . :. ' : . : FROM: Michael Hullander, Public Works Superintendent DATE: January 17, 2012 i SUBJECT: Purchase of Vehicle for Building Inspections. INTRODUCTION: Council is requested to approve the purchase of one new vehicle for the Building Inspections Department as provided in the 2012 Capital Equipment Budget. BACKGROUND: The 2012 Capital Equipment Budget for the Building Inspections Department identified a need to replace unit # 424 a 2001 Chevy 4x4 S 10. Staff is recommending replacing unit #426 a 2002 GMC 4x4 Sonoma due to more miles and worse condition. Staff is requesting to purchase a 2012 Ford Fusion Sedan using State Bid Pricing from Midway Ford for the purchase price of $17,320.55. Staff will be using State Contract #35458 for this purchase with the funds to be expended from the Capital Equipment Internal Service Fund. Per Council direction to purchase vehicles with higher miles per gallon ratings and discussions with Department Head Michael Leek, staff recommended to replace three of the four 4x4 compact pickups with the Ford Fusion front wheel drive sedans with an estimated combined rating of 25 miles per gallon. These vehicles are estimated to save the department in fuel costs, comparing a 4x4 compact pickup with a Ford Fusion, it is estimated to save $6,100.00 per vehicle over the next ten years based on $4.00 per gallon of gasoline. Due to the higher annual costs of Hybrids, staff cannot recommend there purchase at this time. ALTERNATIVES: 1. Authorize the purchase of one new 2012 Ford Fusion Sedan from Midway Ford for the purchase price of $17,320.55. 2. Deny the request. 3. Table for additional information. RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends alternative number one. ACTION REQUESTED: Motion to direct staff to purchase one new 2012 Ford Fusion Sedan from Midway Ford far the purchase price of $17,320.55, in accordance with State of Minnesota Contract #35458, with the funding to be expended from the Capital Equipment Fund Internal Service Fund. /////,/ ` / ..
