I • CITY OF SHAKOPEE Memorandum TO: Mayor and City Council CONSENT Mark McNeill, City Administrator FROM: Kris Wilson, Assistant City Administrator SUBJECT: Authorization to Hire Police Records Technician DATE: June 27, 2012 INTRODUCTION: The Police Department is requesting Council approval to fill the last vacancy for the position of Police Records Technician. BACKGROUND: For a period of time this spring the Police Department had two vacant Records Technician positions. The first was filled by the hiring of Claudia Cassman in early June. The Department is now seeking Council authorization to fill the remaining position. The Police Civil Service Commission has conducted the necessary recruitment and testing process to establish an eligible register. Minnesota State Statute Chapter 419 requires the Police Civil Service Commission to submit the top three names listed on the eligible register to the Appointing Authority (City Council), to fill any vacancy. The following are the top three individuals currently on the eligible register (listed in alphabetical order): Amberly Cortez Karen Ennis Michele Lawrence RECOMMENDATION: Chief Tate recommends that Amberly Cortez be hired for the position of Police Records Technician, at Step E of Grade 3 of 2012 Non -Union Pay Plan ($18.11 per hr.), subject to successful completion of the required pre- employment physical / drug -test and psychological evaluation. BUDGET IMPACT: Funding for this position is included in the Police Department's adopted budget for 2012. RELATIONSHIP TO VISION: This relates to item E: Deliver effective and efficient public services by a staff of well - trained, caring and professional employees. REQUESTED ACTION: If the Council concurs, it is asked to offer a motion to hire Amberly Cortez as a Police Records Technician, at Step E of Grade 3 of the 2012 Non -Union Pay Plan, contingent upon successful completion of the required pre - employment screenings.
