CITY OF SHAKOPEE
Memorandum dSE
TO: Mayor and City Council
FROM: Mark McNeill, City Administrator
SUBJECT: Joint City Council /Park Board Meeting
DATE: June 5, 2012
Comment:
Introduction:
The Council is asked to consider calling for a joint meeting between itself and the Parks
and Recreation Advisory Board (PRAB) for Tuesday, July 10 2012.
Background:
Parks, Recreation, and Natural Resources Director Jamie Polley has indicated that a joint
meeting between the City Council and PRAB would be desirable to talk about a variety
of things:
1. Overview of what the PRAB has been working on (dog park, tennis facility, joint
school board activities, etc.)
2. Overview of park financing.
3. Park planning process discussion
She notes that it would be helpful to have these discussions before additional research on
these topics take place.
Discussion:
The Council can choose one of two options:
1. Schedule a separate meeting, with Tuesday, July 10 2012 as a suggested date.
2. Schedule the joint meeting with a definite start time as part of the regular City
Council meeting on Tuesday, July 17 2012.
In the second example, the Park Board could be told to be there at, for example, 8:30
P.M. However, given the unknown length of the agenda for July 17 meeting, it is
possible that the start of the joint meeting with the Park Board might have to be delayed
until later in the evening. This could mean that there may not be sufficient time to fully
discuss these scheduled items.
Recommendation:
We recommend that a joint meeting be established, and that a separate meeting night be
set. The recommended date is Tuesday, July 10
Relationship to Visioning:
This supports Goal D — "Maintain, Improve and Create Strong Partnerships with Other
Public and Private Sector Entities ".
Action Required:
If the Council concurs, it should, by motion, direct that a joint meeting with the Parks and
Recreation Advisory Board be scheduled for Tuesday, July 10 at 7:00 P.M.
