CITY OF SHAKOPEE s: E ,/3
Memorandum CON~~fiT
' .", " ~\~. ~ t ., \\'
TO: Mayor and City Council
Mark McNeill, City Administrator
FROM: Kris Wilson, Assistant City Administrator
SUBJECT: Authorization to Hire One Police Officer - Travis Goerish
DATE: October 12, 2006
INTRODUCTION:
The Police Department is requesting Council approval to hire Travis Goerish as a probationary
police officer.
BACKGROUND:
The City Council authorized 46 sworn positions in the 2006 Police Department budget. This is
consistent with our workload analysis and staffing ratio of 1.5 officers per 1,000 residents. As of
today there are three vacant police officer positions.
The Police Civil Service Commission conducted the necessary testing that created the Police
Officer eligible register. The following names are the top candidates listed, in alphabetical order,
on the eligible register established by the Police Civil Service Commission.
. Timothy Baker
. Chris Baukol
. Travis Goerish
Minnesota State Statute Chapter 419 requires the Police Civil Service Commission to submit the
top three names listed on the eligible register to the Appointing Authority (City Council), to fill
any vacancy. Staff recommends that Travis Goerish be hired at Step 1 of the current police
officer labor contract. Mr. Goerish has served as a Community Service Officer with the City of
Shakopee since May of 2004.
VISIONING RELATIONSHIP
Keeping the Shakopee Police Department fully staffed with qualified individuals helps support
Goal B - a high quality of life for residents of Shakopee.
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends that the City Council authorize hiring Travis Goerish as a probationary police
officer, at Step 1 of the current labor contract ($3,708.51 per month). As a current employee,
Mr. Goerish has already completed the City's required pre-employment screenings and would
not need to do so again.
ACTION REQUESTED:
If the Council conGurs, they should, by motion, authorize the hiring of probationary police
officer Travis Goerish at Step 1 of the current labor contract.
