DATE: October 17,2006 DISCUSSION ITEM: Public Works is requesting to replace the 1996 Asphalt roller compactor and would like council to consider adding this purchase to the 2007 Capital Equipment Budget. Total estimated cost of Compactor and Trailer is $37,000.00. Staff had made this request and I apologize for not adding this to the list so that it could have been discussed at our previous 2007 capital equipment budget meeting. Our existing asphalt roller is in poor condition and due to the hydraulics, trailer arm assembly and drive train this unit has become unreliable and is experiencing considerable downtime. Staff is requesting to upgrade to a slightly larger model for better compaction when doing larger repairs. Staff is also requesting to eliminate the trailer arm assembly and purchase a trailer to transport the roller to the job sites. Although the trailer arm assembly was supposed to save time to make patching more efficient the reality is just the opposite. Staff is frustrated that they cannot go faster than 20 miles per hour to get to the job sites in our rural subdivisions due to the high vibrations which cause unsafe travel conditions. Staffis requesting council to consider adding this to the 2007 Capital Equipment Budget for replacement with an estimated cost of $37,000.00. ALTERNATIVES: 1. Add the request to the 2007 Capital Equipment Budget. 2. Deny the request. 3. Table for additional information. ACTION REQUESTED: Authorize staff to add the purchase of an asphalt roller compactor and trailer to the 2007 Capital Equipment Budget with an estimated purchase price of $37,000.00.
