Authorization to Hire for Maintenance Operator Position CITY OF SHAKOPEE ~ E.5: MEMORANDUM To: Mayor and City Council CONSENT Mark McNeill, City Administrator From: Kris Wilson, Assistant City Administrato~ Date: September 29,2006 Subject: Authorization to Hire for Maintenance Operator Position INTRODUCTION The City Council is asked to authorize hiring Jim Pass for the position of Maintenance Operator in the Public Works Department. BACKGROUND AND DISCUSSION On September 5, the City Council authorized hiring Matthew Hjermstad for the open Maintenance Operator position in the Public Works Department. While Mr. Hjermstad had verbally indicated his intention to accept the position, he changed his mind prior to beginning work with the City. Therefore, the original interview panel met again to reconsider the other five applicants interviewed. After discussing the remaining candidates and checking references, the interview panel now recommends that the City Council authorize hiring Jim Pass for the position. Mr. Pass currently owns and operates his own fencing business and has held seasonal positions with the Public Works Department in the past. RECOMMENDATION It is recommended that the City Council authorize hiring Jim Pass for the position of Maintenance Operator, with a starting salary of$17.219 per hour, which is Step 1 ofthe current union contract. This action is contingent on successful completion ofthe City's required pre-employment screenings, Mr, Pass's anticipated start date is October 30,2006. RELATIONSHIP TO VISION The hiring of well qualified individuals to serve the residents of Shako pee contributes to Goal D - a vibrant, resilient and stable community. REQUESTED ACTION If Council concurs, it should move to authorize hiring Jim Pass for the position of Maintenance Operator, at Step 1 of the union contract ($17.219 per hour), contingent on the successful completion of the City's required pre-employment screenings.
