BACKGROUND The Shakopee Fire Department recently purchased three MDTs for use with a new web based software program that Scott County is developing for Fire Departments in the county. This program will give us in-vehicle data that will allow us to receive the address of the incident, the status of fire vehicles in service to the incident, a map of the location, any hazards we need to be aware of, and also a 3D satellite view of the building. The MDT's are essentially a Panasonic Toughbook Laptop similar to what it used in the police squad cars. In order to equip additional fire vehicles, the Fire Department brought a proposal for the purchase of 8 more MDTs to the Telecommunications Advisory Commission (TAC) on July 28, 2010. BUDGET IMPACT The total cost of the 8 MDTs is $19,792. The Telecommunications Advisory Commission voted to recommend allocating the $17,000 budgeted for Research and Development in the Telecommunication Division's 2010 budget for this purchase. The remaining cost, plus ongoing costs for licensing and Internet connections will be funded from the Fire Department's adopted operating ilIS1ONING RELATIONSHIP This action supports: Goal B: Positively Manage the Challenges and Opportunities Presented by Growth, Development and Change. Goal E: Deliver Effective and Efficient Public Services by a Staff of Well Trained, Caring, and Professional Employees. ACTION REQUESTED If Council concurs, it should offer a motion to authorize the purchase of 8 additional Mobil Data Terminals. (MDTs) for the Shakopee Fire Department at a total cost not to exceed $20,000, with $17,000 coming from the Telecommunications Division's 2010 allocation for Research and Development.
