CITY OF SHAKOPEE Memorandum C 0 N S EF N T TO: Mayor and City Council Mark McNeill, City Administrator FROM: Kris Wilson, Assistant City Administrator2Q,� SUBJECT: Authorization to Hire Recreation Supervisor DATE: July 29, 2010 INTRODUCTION: The City Council is asked to authorize the hiring of Sarah Foley as a full -tine Recreation Supervisor in the Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources Department. BACKGROUND: Travis Karlen resigned his position as a Recreation Supervisor with the City's Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources Department in May of this year. On June 1, Council adopted an updated job description and authorized staff to begin the hiring process to fill the position. The position is responsible for overseeing the City's aquatics, fitness and senior programming. The position was advertised and a total of 51 applications were received. The City conducted first round interviews with 11 candidates and then held second round interviews for 4 finalists. Staff recommends hiring Sarah Foley to fill the position. Ms. Foley holds a bachelor's degree in health, physical education and recreation from South Dakota State University. She has 8 years of experience as the Aquatics Director for the City of Chaska, and has held aquatics and fitness- related positions with the City of Waconia, Watertown -Mayer Community Education, and Eastern Carver County School District. Given her experience and salary history, it is recommended that Ms. Foley be started at the second step of the six -step pay grade for this position. VISIONING RELATIONSHIP: Hiring qualified individuals to provide service to Shakopee residents helps support Goal E — Deliver effective and efficient public services by a staff of well- trained, caring and professional employees. RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that Sarah Foley be hired as a Recreation Supervisor at Step E of Grade 7 ($56,303), contingent upon successful completion of a background / driver's license check and pre - employment physical / drug test. ACTION REQUESTED: If the Council concurs, it should offer a motion to authorize the hiring of Sarah Foley as a Recreation Supervisor at Step E of Grade 7 of the City's full -time pay plan, contingent upon the successful completion of the required pre- employment screenings.
