TO: Mayor and City Council
FROM: Jamie Polley, Parks & Recreation Director

SUBJECT: Replacement of Ice Arena Hot Water Heater (A)
Action Sought
Authorize the replacement of the hot water heater in the Ice Arena in the amount
not to exceed $18,000.00.
Background
There are currently two hot water heaters in the Ice Arena that are original to the
building. The hot water heaters are used to heat the water that is put into the ice
resurfacer to make new ice. The ice arena utilizes one hot water heater at a
time. One hot water heater began to malfunction in the fall of 2014 and is now not
working. The back up hot water heater has a leak and is currently running at 20%.
Discussion
With the potential of the construction of a new ice arena and the renovation of the
Community Center, staff is recommending the purchase of a new high efficiency hot
water heater that can be utilized in the indoor pool area of the new construction. The
cost for the high efficiency hot water heater (including removal of the current hot
water heater, permits and electrical) is approximately $17,500.00. The cost to
replace the current hot water heater with a similar hot water heater is approximately
$13,500.00. This smaller hot water heater would not be able to be reused in either
the new ice arena or Community Center expansion.
Budget Impact
The 2015 operating budget currently has a balance of$29,000.00 in the building
maintenance line items. It is anticipated that $11,000.00 will be sufficient to
cover building maintenance needs for the remainder of the year.
Two quotes were obtained to replace the hot water heater. The lowest quote
submitted was from Minnesota Plumbing and Heating for the amount of$15,987.00
plus approximately $1,500.00 to remove the existing hot water heater, secure the
proper permits and complete the electrical connections.
Relationship to Vision
A Keep Shakopee a safe and healthy community where residents can pursue
active and quality lifestyles.
Requested Action
If Council concurs, move to authorize the replacement of the Ice Arena hot water
heater with the recommended high efficiency hot water heater for an amount not to
exceed $18,000.00.
