CITY OF SHAKOPEE CONSENT
Memorandum
TO: Mayor and City Council
FROM: Mark McNeill, City Administrator
SUBJECT: Community Center Improvements Meeting
DATE: June 1, 2010
Comment:
Introduction:
The Council is asked to set a special meeting for Monday, August 2 at 7:00 pm, to hear
the reports of consultants for the proposed Community Center improvements.
Background:
At its meeting of May 18 the City Council approved the hiring of Oertel Architects for
architectural and physical facility programming consulting for the proposed Community
Center improvements. It also hired Park & Recreation Consulting, LLC, and Ken Vraa
Consulting for financial and feasibility studies. The improvements would include a
second sheet of ice, a senior center, and certain improvements to the facilities fitness
area.
Since the May 18 City Council meeting, staff has met with the consultants, and has
established a time frame for reports to be ready for the City Council. After allowing for
the gathering of background information and the interviewing of representative
stakeholders, we are recommending that a meeting be held Monday, August 2nd at 7:00
pm for the Council to hear the consultants' reports.
The group requesting the improvements ( "Shakopee Recreation: Bringing People
Together ") has asked for this question to be placed on a referendum on November 2 A
decision to call for that election would need to be made by August 18 If the Council
needs more information before making that decision, it could further consider the
decision at one of the following meetings:
August 4 (regular City Council meeting)
August 9 (budget work session)
August 10 (OPEN)
August 16 (budget work session)
August 17 (regular City Council meeting)
In order for the August 2nd meeting date to be available, a previously scheduled budget
work session will need to be rescheduled. Action for that is scheduled elsewhere on the
June 1 agenda.
Recommendation:
Due to the interest in this issue, we recommend that a separate meeting be scheduled so
that Council may consider the reports by the consultants. I further recommend that this
meeting be scheduled for Monday, August 2 at 7:00 pm.
Relationship to Visioning:
This supports Goal F, "Housekeeping ".
Action Required:
If the Council concurs, it should, by motion, set a special meeting to be held Monday,
August 2 at 7:00 pm in the City Council chambers, to hear the reports of the financial
and architectural consultants for the proposed Community Center Improvements.
