SUBJECT: Filling a Vacancy on the Shakopee Public Utilities Commission

INTRODUCTION:
City Council is asked to accept a resignation and consider Resolution No. 7016 filling a vacancy
on the Shakopee Public Utilities Commission.
BACKGROUND:
Mr. Michael W. Romans has submitted his resignation from the Shakopee Public Utilities
Commission effective May 18, 2010.
Five applications were received for appointment to the Shakopee Public Utilities Commission in
January when the City accepted applications to fill numerous expiring terms on the City's
boards and commissions. Three of the five applicants were subsequently appointed to various
boards and commissions. Councilor Clay and Cf:•uncilor Heitzman were on the Interview
Committee and participated in the interviews for all applicants interested in an appointment to
one or more of the various expiring terms. They are both recommending the appointment of
Joe Helkamp to the Shakopee Public Utilities Commission. (The fifth applicant in January was
unable to meet for an interview with the Interview Committee.)
ALTERNATIVES:
1. Concur with the Interview Committee and appoint Mr. Helkamp
2. Advertise to fill the vacancy
3. Ask the Interview Committee to meet with the fifth applicant
RECOMMENDATION:
Councilors Clay and Heitzman recommend the appointment of Mr. Helkamp.
RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Accept the resignation of Mr. Michael W. Romans from the Shakopee Public Utilities
Commission; and, Offer Resolution No. 7016, a Resolution Appointing Joe Helkamp to the
Shakopee Public Utilities Commission, and move its adoption.
RESOLUTION NO. 7016
A RESOLUTION APPOINTING JOE HELKAMP TO THE
SHAKOPEE PUBLIC UTILITIES COMMISSION
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SHAKOPEE, MINNESOTA,
that the following appointment hereby be made:
Joe Helkamp is appointed to the Shakopee Public Utilities Commission to fill the
unexpired term of Michael Romans, which will expire February 28, 2013.
Adopted in regular session of the City Council of the City of Shakopee,
Minnesota, held this 1st day of June, 2010.
