SUBJECT: Authorization to Hire One Police Officer - Chad Wimmer
DATE: April 30, 2010
INTRODUCTION:
The Police Department is requesting Council approval to hire Chad Wimmer as a probationary
police officer.
BACKGROUND:
The Police Department currently has two vacancies for licensed police officers plus an expected
retirement in late May. The Police Civil Service Commission recently conducted the necessary
testing to update the Police Officer eligible register. The following names are the top candidates
currently listed, in alphabetical order, on the eligible register established by the Police Civil
Service Commission.
. Jared Peterson
. George Pufahl
. Chad Wimmer
Minnesota State Statute Chapter 419 requires the Police Civil Service Commission to submit the
top three names listed on the eligible register to the Appointing Authority (City Council), to fill
any vacancy. Chief Tate recommends that Chad Wimmer be hired at Step 1 of the current police
officer labor contract.
RELATIONSHIP TO GOALS:
This agenda item relates to Goal E: Deliver effective and efficient public services by a staff of
well-trained, caring and professional employees.
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends that the City Council authorize hiring Chad Wimmer as a probationary police
officer, at Step 1 of the current labor contract ($23.22 per hr.), contingent upon successful
completion of the City's required pre-employment physical, drug-test and psychological testing
for police officers.
ACTION REQUESTED:
If the Council concurs, they should, by motion, authorize the hiring of probationary police
officer Chad Wimmer at Step 1 of the current labor contract contingent upon successful
completion of the required pre-employment screening.
