City of Shakopee
Memorandum
SE.i
TO: Mayor and City Council
Mark McNeill, City Administrator CONSEr~T
FROM: Kris Wilson, Assistant City Administrato~J
SUBJECT: Reclassification of IT Specialist Position
DATE: April 1, 2010
Introduction
The City Council is asked to authorize reclassification of the position of IT Specialist from non-
exempt to exempt.
Background
The City has two IT positions - IT Coordinator and IT Specialist. The IT Coordinator is
currently a salaried position, exempt from the overtime provisions of the federal Fair Labor
Standards Act (FLSA). As the supervisor for both ofthese staff positions, I am seeking Council
approval to change the status of the IT Specialist so that it too is an exempt or salaried position.
The position meets the requirements for being exempt under the category of "Computer
Employee" and making the change will give us more flexibility for the IT Specialist to work the
hours necessary to solve problems when they come up and, in return, provides him with more
flexibility as well. The change from non-exempt to exempt does not alter any other aspect of the
job description or increase the employee's salary. However, according to our personnel policies,
exempt employees do accrue vacation at a faster rate than non-exempt employees, in what totals
one additional week of vacation per year.
Budget Impact
There is no budget impact as a result of this action.
Relationship to Vision
This is a housekeeping item.
Recommendation:
I recommend that the position of IT Specialist be reclassified from non-exempt to exempt.

Requested Action:
If it concurs, the Council should move to approve the reclassification of the position of IT
Specialist from non-exempt to exempt and direct that the job description be changed accordingly.
