Working together to enhance safety, reduce congestion and
maximize economic development along the U.S. Highway 169
interregional corridor
~ In service of this mission, the Coalition has adopted the
following objectives:
.. Exercise leadership in the development of policies,
programs and projects that will promote the mission
described above.
.. Enlist the assistance and cooperation of the private
sector in achieving the mission.
c Enlist the assistance and cooperation of federal,
state and regional agencies in achieving the mission.
U.S. Highway169 Corridor
u.s. Hwy 169 Corridor:
. An Inter-Regional Corridor from 1-494 to Mankato and
important urban freeway segment from 1-494 to 1-94
. Identified bottleneck @ 1-494
. Provides access to major employment centers - along
the corridor.
. Provides access for freight movement from southern
Minnesota to Minneapolis-St. Paul, International Airport
and Metropolitan Region's -- major transportation and
entertainment destinations
U.S. Hwy 169 Coalition Priorities:
· Implementing the U.S. Hwy 169 Inter-Regional Corridor
Study identified regional priority projects (Figure 1).
. Further transit analysis along this corridor
. Study of priority needs north of 1-494

f"T Poor Operation
US HWY 169 is a high priority interregional corridor from 1-
494 to Mankato. The segment of US HWY 169 from Belle
Plaine north is currently operating below inter-regional
corridor targets.
s:: Congestion
US Hwy 169 from the Bloomington Ferry Bridge north
, experiences some of the highest levels of congestion on
the Metro highway system.
I; Crash Rate
The US Hwy 169 corridor from Mankato to 1-494
experiences crashes due to at grade intersections where
interchanges should be in operation..

III Interchange Crashes
US Hwy 169/1-494 -- interchange has one of the highest crash
rate of any interstate interchange on the 1-494/694 beltway
III Freight and Good Movements
US Hwy 169 between Mankato and 1-494 carries the 2nd highest
non-freeway heavy commercial truck volumes in the state.
III Major Transit Corridor
US Hwy 169 is a growing urban transit corridor with potential of
long haul service to Mankato.

III Moves the equivalent of 30,000 tons of freight by truck

.. Carries the fifth heaviest freight volume of any highway in
Minnesota. The top four are 1-94, 1-90, 1-35 and Highway
52.
.. Connects major producers of ethanol, biodiesel and their
byproducts to markets and refiners along 'ethanol alley,'
the southwest freight corridor formed by Highway 60 and
the Union Pacific Railroad.*

.. Provides one of two major conduits to the Ports of
Savage for grain exports via the Minnesota and
Mississippi River systems, guaranteeing low-cost,
competitive
transportation to regional and world markets for i
Minnesota farmers.

t:. Is expected to playa future role in expanding access
from western Minnesota agricultural producers to the
Ports of Savage via routes capable of bypassing Metro
congestion including highways 14, 15,71 and 212.**
