The 2010 budget identifies the replacement of the Fire Inspector's Vehicle estimated at $22,000.00. Staff is requesting to purchase the Assistant Fire Chief vehicle at this time. BACKGROUND: The 2009 budget included an appropriation of $35,000.00 for the purchase of one Assistant Fire Chief Vehicle. Funding is from the Capital Equipment Internal Service Fund. The new vehicle will replace the 2003 Dodge Ram. The Dodge Ram will be retained for use by the Fire Inspector which was identified for replacement in the 2010 budget. The Fire Inspectors vehicle, a 1994 Chevy Suburban will be sold on auction. Staff is recommending using State of Minnesota Contract for the purchase of a 2010 Ford Explorer 4x4 with options from Elk River Ford for the price of $23,101.40. Staff researched the new 2010 Chevy Tahoe Emergency Response Vehicle but feels the Ford Explorer meets the needs of the Fire Department and is $5,200.00 less. Staff s recommendation considered the needs of providing an effective emergency response vehicle for the Fire Department with a low purchase price while decreasing the fuel consumption costs for the Department. The sale of the suburban will eliminate the vehicle with the least fuel economy. The Ford Explorer for the Assistant Fire Chiefwill have the most miles driven with the best fuel economy. ALTERNATIVES: 1. Authorize the purchase. 2. Deny the purchase. 3. Table for additional information RECOMMENDATION: Alternative number 1. ACTION REOUESTED: Move to authorize the purchase of one Ford Explorer from Elk River Ford for the amount of $23,101.40 in accordance with State of Minnesota Contract #440054. The funds to be expended from the Capital Equipment Internal Service Fund. ~,~ Michael Hullander Public Works Superintendent
