SUBJECT: Request to Accept Laser Donation by Resolution Number 6976

INTRODUCTION:
City Council is asked to adopt Resolution Number 6976, a Resolution to accept a Laser
Radar, worth approximately $3,500.00, from the Minnesota Department of Public
Safety's Safe and Sober program. The Laser Radar will be used to improve traffic
enforcement in the City of Shakopee.
BACKGROUND:
Safe and Sober is a grant-funded, traffic safety and impaired driving prevention program
involving law enforcement agencies throughout the State. The Shakopee Police
Department continues to receive grant funds through the Safe and Sober program, which
funds additional traffic enforcement during our most active traveling times.
Officers who participate in this program keep track of their activity and report the results
to the State. The Safe and Sober program awards equipment to various participating
agencies. The Shakopee Police Department was recently awarded a Pro Laser III, Laser
Radar for its participation and continued strong performance with the Safe and Sober
program.

ACTION REQUESTED:
If City Council concurs, it should, by motion, adopt Resolution Number 6976, a
Resolution of the City of Shakopee, Minnesota, accepting the donation of a Laser Radar
from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety's Safe and Sober program.
RESOLUTION NO. 6976
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF SHAKOPEE, MINNESOTA,
ACCEPTING THE DONA nON OF A LASER RADAR FROM THE MINNESOTA
DEP ARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY'S SAFE AND SOBER PROGRAM
WHEREAS, on November 6, 2002, the City Council adopted Resolution No.
5794, which established procedure relating to the receipt of gifts and donations by the
City; and
WHEREAS, Resolution No. 5794 specifies that donations valued at more than
$1,000 shall be accepted by resolution of the City Council, and shall require a two-thirds
majority of the Council for acceptance; and
WHEREAS, the Minnesota Department of Public Safety's Safe and Sober
program has graciously donated a Laser Radar to the Shakopee Police Department to
improve traffic safety enforcement.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF SHAKOPEE, MINNESOTA, that the donation of a Laser Radar is gratefully
accepted; and
FURTHER, that City staff is directed to send a letter to the donor, acknowledging
receipt of the gift and expressing the appreciation of the City Council.
Adopted in adjourned regular session of the City Council of the City of Shakopee,
Minnesota, held this ISh day of December, 2009.
