Downtown Partnership Holiday Street Closings ADD 6/IJ \) F \ CITY OF SHAKOPEE Memorandum TO: Mayor and City Council FROM: Mark McNeill, City Administrator SUBJECT: Downtown Partnership Holiday Street Closings-December 4th DATE: December I, 2009 Comment: Introduction: Ths;.Council h.a1) flsked to authorize the closure of certain streets in the downtown area on Friday,' December 4th, for a parade as part of the Downtown Partnership Holiday Festival. Background: The Downtown Holiday Festival will again be sponsored by Shakopee Downtown Partnership. Itwill be held this weekend, December 4th and 5th. Included will be caroling, carriage rides, and music beginning at 5 PM on Friday from 5 until 7 PM. A "Velodazzle Parade" involving decorated bicycles will take place at 6:15 PM. In order to facilitat~ this, the Partnership has requested the ability to prohibit through traffic by means of barriers being placed for the 100 blocks of Holmes, Lewis and Sommerville Streets, and First and Second Avenues (west-bound only) betweenHolmes and Sommerville. Parking restrictions are not being requested. It is anticipated that this will be from 4:30, until approximately7:15 PM. These closures will be coordinated through the Shakopee Police Department. Recommendation: We recommend that City Council authorize the temporary closure of portions of streets named above. Relationship to Visioning: This supports Goal C "Great place for kids to grow up" Action Required: If the Council concurs, it should, by motion, authorize temporary closure of portions of the 100 Blocks of Holmes, Sommerville, and Lewis Streets; and First and Second A venues (west-bound only on Second) between Holmes and Sommerville, to accommodate the Holiday Festival activities on December 4,2009.
