Officers DATE: July 17, 2009 Introduction The Council is asked to approve the attached job descriptions for part-time officers of the Fire Department. Background The Council approved formal job descriptions for each of the part-time officers in the Fire Department in the fall of 2007, prior to the appointment of full-time Chief Rick Coleman. The general duties of each officer position were previously outlined in the Department's bylaws. Officers are appointed to serve two-year terms. Those selected and appointed following the adoption of the current job descriptions in the fall of 2007 are now approaching the end of their terms. After leading the Department for slightly more than year and working with the existing structure, Chief Coleman would like to make some changes to the position descriptions and the overall organizational chart, prior to making officer appointment for the next two-year term. Budget Impact The proposed changes are budget neutral in terms of salary costs. (see Attachment A). Relationship to Vision This item contributes to Goal D - a vibrant, resilient and stable City organization. Requested Action . Dent.: full.:.time nosition) CITY of SHAKOPEE JOB DESCRIPTION POSITION: ASSISTANT FIRE CHIEF of OPERATIONS STATUS: PART-TIME DEPARTMENT: FIRE REPORTS TO: FIRE CHIEF JOB SUMMARY: This position manages or oversees various programs within the Fire Department including the training and safety programs; special response teams, the Department's standard operating guidelines and policies; and the coordination of vehicles, equipment and facilities. Responds to emergency incidents and assumes command as necessary or assigned. Assists the Fire Chief with the overall operation and management of the Department. SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED: Work is performed independently under the general direction of the Fire Chief. Also assists with proper documentation and training record keeping for all firefighters. Responds to emergency incidents and assumes command as necessary or assigned. This position also assists the Chief and Assistant Chief with the overall operation and management ofthe Fire Department. SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Work is performed independently under the general direction of the Deputy Chief of Engineering. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: . Responds to his/her assigned station for emergency incidents within the Shakopee Fire District and other communities of the Mutual Aid Association. . Performs maintenance and repairs of all self-containing breathing apparatus of the Fire Department. . Maintains an up-to-date inventory of all self-containing breathing apparatus and related maintenance equipment ofthe Fire Department. . Prepares and implements a preventative maintenance schedule for the Department's self- containing breathing apparatus and related equipment. . Assists with the development of capital equipment and maintenance budgets for assigned station's self-containing breathing apparatus. . Keeps records in accordance with applicable standards. .
