Introduction:
At its meeting of June 2nd, the City Council will hear a presentation from the Scott
County Safe Communities Coalition.
Background:
Previously, the City was contacted by Linda Schwichtenberg ofthe County's Public
Health Office. She indicated that the Scott County Safe Communities Coalition has as
its goal creating safer roads and driving habits, and is seeking to decrease the number of
fatalities and injuries resulting from vehicular accidents.
Dr. Michael Wilcox will make a presentation to the Council regarding the Coalition's
work in Shakopee and Scott County.
Relationship to Visioning:
This supports Goal A: "Active and Healthy Community".
Action Required:
No action is required of the Council at this time.

*Scott County Public Health Dear City Council Members:
*Scott County Sheriff's Office Motor vehicle crashes take a tremendous toll on the public, both in terms of
*Scott County Attorney's Office loss of life and economic costs. In the fall of 2002, the Minnesota Department
*Minnesota State Patrol of Public Safety, Office of Traffic Safety provided federal grant funding for
*Elko-New Market Police the creation of the Scott County Safe Communities Coalition. Led by Public
*New Prague Police Health, the Coalition has increased its membership from 13 community
*Belle Plaine Police partners in 2002 to 32 partners in 2009.

*Shakopee Police The two primary goals of the Scott County Safe Communities Coalition are
*Savage Police to decrease the number of crash fatalities and injuries related to impaired
* Jordan Police driving and to increase safe driving habits such as; wearing seat belts,
*Prior Lake-Savage Area Schools installing infant car seats correctly, slowing down and avoiding distracted
*New Prague Public Schools driving behaviors.
*Belle Plaine Public Schools
*Shakopee Public Schools Although the Scott County Safe Communities Coalition has made great
*Jordan Public Schools strides towards the goal of creating safer roads and driving behaviors, we still
*Queen of Peace Hospital have a lot of work to do. Twelve fatal crashes occurred in Scott County in
*New Prague Ambulance 2008. Five of these fatalities were not using safety equipment (seat belts,
* Mdewakanton Fire/Emergency helmets, etc), three fatalities were motorcycle crashes, and six involved
Services alcohol, drugs or both.

Center It takes a whole community to build a truly safe community. Dr. Wilcox's
*Scott County Highway Dept. presentation will provide updates to the council regarding some of the work
*Shakopee Community Services we have done in your community and to encourage local support and
*Scott County Transit involvement with our strategies/activities.

December 21S\2008 - January 4th. 2009
The Scott County Safe Communities Coalition is a partnership of agencies and
organizations in Scott County who have come together to promote community awareness
of the high number of serious injuries and deaths caused by alcohol-related traffic
crashes.
The following are a list of bars and restaurants in the county who have agreed to
participate in our 5th annual Home for the Holidays Designated Driver Program by
providing free non-alcoholic beverages to customers who identify themselves as
designated drivers. Please thank them for ensuring their customers arrive home safely for
the holidays!
