CITY OF SHAKOPEE
Memorandum
TO: Mayor and City Council
FROM: Mark McNeill, City Administrator
SUBJECT: Appointment of New Police Chief
DATE: May 5,2009
Comment:
Introduction:
The City Council is asked to affirm the appointment of Jeffrey C. Tate as the next Chief
of Police / Emergency Management Director for the City of Shako pee.
Background:
Elsewhere on the agenda of May 5 is the acceptance of resignation by reason of
retirement for Daniel T. Hughes. That resignation is to be effective midnight, May 31 st.
The City's Civil Service Commission began preparations for filling the position when it
first became aware ofMr. Hughes' plans last year. In February, advertisements for the
anticipated vacancy were posted, and nineteen applicants were received as a result. The
Civil Service Commission selected and interviewed seven semi-finalists. In early April,
the Commission recommended three finalists.
Following receipt of that Eligibility List, the City had the finalists engage in testing and
in a series of interviews. From those exercises, Jeffrey C. Tate, currently one oftwo
Captains in the Shakopee Police Department, is my recommendation to the City Council
to be the next Shakopee Chief of Police. A complete background investigation has been
performed by an outside professional, and has shown satisfactory results.
I am asking that the Council make this appointment at its May 5th meeting. An
employment agreement for Mr. Tate is expected to be brought forth to the City Council
for consideration on May 19th.
Recommendation:
I recommend that Jeffrey C. Tate be appointed as Chief of Police for the City of
Shakopee effective June 1,2009.
Relationship to Visioning:
This supports Goal D, "Vibrant, Resilient, & Stable".
Action Required:
If the Council concurs, it should, by motion, appoint Jeffrey C. Tate as Chief of Police I
Emergency Management Director for the City of Shakopee effective June 1, 2009.
