DATE: May 5, 2009
TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council

Shakopee Police Civil Service Commission Members
FROM: Dan Hughes, Chief of PolicelEmergency Management Director
SUBJECT: Retirement
I have been truly blessed to work in a wonderful, rewarding career for the last 35 and 1/4 years. lhave
had opportunities to serve in first-line leadership positions in a public safety department, fire
department and command positions within two excellent suburban police departments. In both of these
cities in which I have worked, the organizations were in a growth pattern due to rapid expansion within
the city in both residential and commercial development. Working in a growing organization has been
extremely satisfying. With growth usually come resources, which Council has been very supportive in
allocating to City of Shakopee emergency services.
I would like to thank you, the City Council, Department Heads, and members of the Police Civil
Service Commission, for your support in building an outstanding police agency over the last 11 years.
Through your supportive and collaborative efforts, we have positioned our department to continue to
move in a positive direction, providing vital policing services to our community members and visitors.
My peers are quite envious.
Finally, I would like to thank the amazing women and men ofthe Shakopee Police Department.
Throughout my 11 years with the City of Shakopee, I have heard numerous times about the positive
impact our employees have on customers in their daily lives. Our goal has been to hire and promote
only the best and brightest employees. Without their support, cooperation, dedication, and service,
these past years would not have been as productive, successful or rewarding for our agency, the city
and our community.
My last date of employment with the City of Shakopee will be Sunday, May 31, 2009. I wish
continued success to Chief Jeff Tate and the other members of the Shakopee Police Department.
Thank you.
