CITY OF SHAKOPEE CONSENT
MEMORANDUM
To: Mayor and City Council
Mark McNeill, City Administrator
From: Mark Themig, Facilities and Recreation Director
Meeting Date: March 4, 2003
Subject: Shakopee Hockey Association Presentation
INTRODUCTION
The Shakopee Hockey Association has requested time at an upcoming Council meeting
or work session to discuss their efforts in researching a second sheet of ice.
DISCUSSION
In 2002, the Hockey Association formed a committee to begin looking into the feasibility
of funding and constructing a second sheet of ice. Since that time, they have met
approximately two times per month to examine a number of issues, including current and
future ice needs, the operation of the current single sheet, what is occurring in the
marketplace, how a second sheet would impact the current operation, and what potential
funding sources exist for construction of a second sheet.
The committee has presented updates to the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board
three times over the past few months. At this time, they are requesting to be placed on
an upcoming agenda to present their initial findings to City Council and discuss future
action.
In looking at upcoming meeting schedules and potential agenda items, City
Administrator Mark McNeill feels that the March 11 th City Council work session would be
the best time for this presentation.
REQUESTED ACTION
If Council concurs, move to authorize an agenda item for the Shakopee Hockey
Association at the March 11th City Council work session.
